Waubonsee Community College in Aurora, IL will offer up to 45 college credits for skills learned on the job, through apprenticeship, or through military service. As part of a federal initiative overseen by US Departments of Education and Labor, Waubonsee will seek to bridge the gap between learning on the job and the earning of college credit. Bridging this gap will result in increased college graduation rates, reduced student loan loads, and a more competitive pool of skilled workers. The program will let workers who have undergone apprenticeship programs as electricians, carpenters, or plumbers to earn hours towards degrees or certification. Details of the program are still being worked out, but the college plans to have them included in their course catalog for next year.
