John Wood Community College is celebrating its 40th year of providing higher education to students in West Central Illinois. This article details how the college has provided benefits to students, area businesses in need of specific skills, and the local economy as a whole. The college’s career and technology programs help students to learn skills that will enable them to enter the technical workforce upon completion of their programs. According to Mike Elbe, JWCC President, “today, colleges must help students plan ahead to find careers in demand, then enter programs designed to provide the knowledge and skills to meet employers’ expectations. Two-year applied degrees are the quickest way to gain skills, enter a career and increase earnings.”
