This article addresses the ways that middle-market companies in Illinois are positioning for growth in 2015. These companies have an annual revenue between $10 million and $1 billion, and they are one of the best places to look to reflect what is happening with the economy. They are traditionally cautious regarding investment, but their plans are indicating confidence for the coming year. Middle-market companies help boost the economy and growth of small businesses. 70% of middle-market Illinois companies (approximately 6,500 businesses) are investing in 2015, including the addition of new employees. Revenue for Illinois companies grew 9.7% over the last 12 months, which is above the national growth rate. Employment growth was 6.7% compared to the national rate of 5%. Manufacturing made up 22% of the growth shown in the state of Illinois. Challenges do remain for these companies, particularly in regards to health care and uncertainty about government actions.
