This article addresses the many strengths, as well as a few weaknesses, seen in Illinois’ manufacturing sector. The state ranks fourth in the nation for industrial jobs. The 542,000 positions are located in 14,000 facilities throughout the state, have a combined payroll of $28 billion per year, and produce 10% of Illinois’ gross product. Many positive factors can be seen including Chicago’s two industrial sectors and the soon-to-be-opened Chicago Digital Manufacturing Lab on Goose Island. Manufacturing positions are important to the state and the government needs to address issues such as the need to keep jobs in the state, replace a retiring workforce, and more.
