23 companies in Moultrie, Douglas, and Coles counties have participated in a survey which showed that over 500 jobs will be available over the next year in Central Illinois. 48% of the jobs will be replacement positions, and 52% will be new hires. This shows a major skills gap between job openings and qualified workforce ready to take those jobs. According to Stepheny McMahon, Sullivan Chamber and Economic Development Director, “there are good careers available in Central Illinois.” The Sullivan Chamber has launched the No Job Left Behind initiative which is designed to match employers and educators in the area to promote jobs and close the skills gap. The top six jobs that are or will be open this year are: assembler, general production, machine CNC operator, painter, warehouse shipping/loading, and industrial forklift operator.
