A recent study by Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce shows that technical innovation, along with a college-educated workforce, has resulted in increased manufacturing productivity over the last decades. The percentage of manufacturing jobs has decreased since World War 2, but the output for each position has increased dramatically. More sophisticated machinery and technology has required operators with higher levels of education. The percentage of manufacturing workers with a college education has climbed from 20% to over 50%. Through newer technology and a skilled workforce, companies have been able to increase productivity without hiring additional workers. In addition, college-educated workers account for more than half of the nations economic output while making up less than one-third of the workforce.
