While women make up half of the US workforce, they represent only a quarter of the manufacturing sector. And less than 10% of young women list manufacturing as a top career choice. Manufacturing is a high paying field, with a shortage of skilled workers to replace the retiring workforce. One thing that needs to change is the misconception of what manufacturing is all about. This will happen through STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) programs being targeted to younger females. Attracting more women to the field will help close the skills gap and bring women into more leadership roles in manufacturing.
