Q: What jobs are available in Mechatronics?

A: First, let’s define Mechatronics. Wikipedia defines Mechatronics as “Originally, mechatronics just included the combination of mechanics and electronics, hence the word is a combination of mechanics and electronics; however, as technical systems have become more and more complex the word has been broadened to include more technical areas.” Typically, it is the application of Mechanical, Electronics, and Robotics knowledge in the manufacture of production systems or machinery. Automated conveyor systems, such as the ones used by UPS and FedEx, are good examples. These conveyors blend the mechanics of motion components with sensors, solenoids, electrical controls, pneumatics, and hydraulics as well as robotic components in the movement of parcels.

Second, job opportunities abound anywhere there is automation. A job could entail the installation and maintenance of automation (like the conveyor example above), robotics, and the use of PLCs. At Harper’s apprenticeship program for Industrial Maintenance Mechanics, we teach those skills and with OJT mentoring by a host company, one would be fully qualified at the end of the program to install, maintain, and perform preventive maintenance on most anything electrical, hydraulic or pneumatic.
