Students considering a career in manufacturing could be eligible for a $1,500 scholarship to Illinois Valley Community College next fall.

Students enrolling full-time in next fall’s Certified Production Technician (CPT) certificate program can apply for up to 10 awards for the fall semester through the newly created Illinois Valley Manufacturers Scholarship.

Recent high school graduates, IVCC students and adults interested in pursuing a career in manufacturing within the IVCC district are eligible.

CPT is endorsed by 14 area manufacturers as the preferred credential for employment with their companies. Average local wage for a technician is $15.85 an hour and most companies offer increases after 90 days as well as healthcare and other benefits.

“Companies are hiring now and foresee numerous openings over the next 5-to-10 years,” said Jennifer Scheri, IVCC business training specialist. “Select employers created the scholarship to show their commitment to training the future workforce.”

The awards, covering approximately 50 percent of the cost of the program, can be used for tuition, fees, books and supplies. The employers who contributed to the fund are also offering a $1,500 award to scholarship recipients who complete the certificate and go to work for their companies.

In addition, full-time CPT students are now eligible to apply for financial aid. Scholarship applications are due by June 5 and can be picked up in the IVCC Foundation office, Room C202, or downloaded at www.ivcc.edu/cpt. For information, call Donna Swiskoski at (815) 224-0551.
