This June, Kankakee Community College (KCC) will introduce its new GirlSTEM program. The college will host a group of girls from fifth through eighth grades and introduce them to science, technology, engineering, and math. The program will offer fun ways to learn STEM, including The Cookie Jar Mystery to teach forensic science, The Carnival Ride to teach mechanics, and Frozen stop motion animation and movie making. Mary Posing, Associate Dean at KCC, came up with the idea for the program and presented it to Nicor Gas who agreed to provide supplies, instructors, and curriculum. Posing said “We want girls to learn about all the STEM opportunities available to women and to pursue these careers.” Nicor is hoping that by introducing STEM, they will help develop a strong workforce in the future.
